Fred Griffin Obituary

Fred Carol Griffin, 84, passed away on April 4, 2024 in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He was born on November 27, 1939 in Alamogordo, New Mexico to Fred M. and Corine Arnell (Trotter) Griffin.

Fred lived his entire life in the mountains. Fred married his high school sweetheart, Marie Samford, on September 26, 1958. They lived various places in the Sacramento Mountains, but finally settled in Hyatt Canyon on land first settled by Fred’s grandfather, Fred M. Griffin Sr. Fred remained here until his passing. As a young man Fred worked and broke horses and ranched. After marrying Marie, he operated equipment, co-owned a gas company, and was a contractor for the Forest Service helping fight forest fires. He then went to work for the Otero County Road Department from which he retired. In addition, he continued to ranch on family land in Elk, New Mexico. Fred was also passionate about gardening. He would grow a giant garden every year and would share the produce with family, friends, and neighbors.

Fred is survived by his daughters, Kathy Davis (Raymond) of Mayhill, Carol Horton (Mark) of Cloudcroft, and Norma Blazer of Capitan.

Fred was blessed with nine grandchildren, Janscen Davis (Gwyneth), Chris Davis (Tabitha), Kira Davis (Dan), Rylan Davis (Jenee), Kyle Horton (Kim), Chad Horton, Blake Horton (Cynthia), Rhett Horton, and Shelby Horton (Garrett); and ten great-grandchildren, Annabelle Horton, Melaina Horton, Jack Horton, Madaleine Davis, Broden Davis, Anna-Lee Davis, Jackson Hewitt, Korin Hewitt, Jayden Hewitt, and Rambler Davis.

Also surviving Fred is his brother, Wayne Griffin (Jane) and numerous nieces.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred M. and Arnell Griffin; his wonderful wife, Marie Griffin; brother, Jim Griffin; and granddaughter, Kira Davis.
