Evelyn Cook Obituary

Evelyn Cook (Klopfer)

On July 2nd, 2021, Evelyn Ruth Klopfer Cook passed from this earth into the loving arms of her savior. Evelyn was a lifelong educator with a passion for literacy and enthusiastically supported women who wanted to pursue their degrees in the field of education.

She was born to Floy Pace and Paul Klopfer on July 28th, 1938, in Alamogordo, NM. Evelyn would later attend Alamogordo High School and New Mexico State University, where she attained a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.

Evelyn was a dedicated educator. Over the course of her four-decade long career Evelyn taught students in Las Cruces, Quemado, Alamogordo, and Mescalero school districts but spent thirty-five years of her teaching career at La Luz Elementary School. She taught multiple generations of the students she adored and was honored to sit at her mother’s old classroom desk. She was active in the National Education Association, 4H, and Delta Kappa Gamma where she held multiple offices.

Although she was passionate about education, her true love was always her family. On August 10, 1957, Evelyn married her sweetheart, Alvin Cook, of Tularosa. Their family grew to include four children Sandy, Sarah, Julie, and Jon, who were brought up on the family farm in Laborcita Canyon where they raised Hereford cattle and cultivated apple orchards.  Her love of education was ever-present. Evelyn took great joy in sharing that love with students and family alike and celebrated important graduations by ringing the old school bell. “Granny,” as she was lovingly known, was a consummate storyteller and known spitfire, often regaling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with stories of when she “used to ride with Billy, the Kid”. She was not one to stand idly by and could always be found by her husband’s side working the land, running tractors, branding calves, and doing it all with authority and grace.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Hazel Jo, eldest daughter Sandy, brother-in-law Eddie Ray, youngest daughter Julie, and four grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Alvin, siblings Paul and James, her children Sarah Cook of Las Cruces and Jon Cook of Cloudcroft, five grandchildren Jenny Cook, Katie Cook-Ragan, Zach Cook, Diana Cook, and Jacob Cook, and eight great-grandchildren.
