Virginia Scarbrough

Virginia Lee Scarbrough passed away on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at her home in Albuquerque. She was 97. Virginia was a native New Mexican, born near Tatum on August 2, 1925 to Victor and May Waldrop. She attended Eastern New Mexico University where she met and married Ed Scarbrough of Levelland, Texas. Virginia and Ed taught in the public school system in Cloudcroft before settling in Alamogordo, where they raised four children and lived for 63 years. After teaching, Virginia opened the Alamogordo Secretarial School in 1967, showing herself to be a strong business leader in the community and educating and supporting women in business. After Virginia sold her school to a national business chain, she spent her time as a volunteer, continued being active in Altrusa, and the Cuba Avenue Church of Christ.
One of Virginia’s joys was traveling the world with Ed and often accompanied by her sister, Floris. They visited every state in the US and 5 continents. As members of the Good Sam Club they went on many memorable road trips. Her other interests included scrabble and playing 42 and Bridge with friends. Later in life she became passionate about painting, producing many beautiful still-lifes and New Mexico landscapes.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Cecil, Aubrey, Fay, Floris, Corrine, and Bernice; her beloved daughter, Sonya Scarbrough of Charleston, West Virginia and her husband and best friend, Ed. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Becky Scarbrough of Mesquite, Nevada, and her daughters, Janeice Scarbrough and Diana Scarbrough of Albuquerque. She is also survived by three grandsons, Jarrod Scarbrough of Tampa, Florida, Eric Scarbrough of Northglenn, Colorado, and Eamon Scarbrough of Albuquerque, and two great grandchildren, Mason Scarbrough of Northglenn, Colorado and Alegra Scarbrough of Tampa, Florida.
Services for Virginia will be Tuesday, August 23 at 10:00 am at the Scenic Chapel at 1334 Scenic Drive in Alamogordo, officiated by Al Maxey, minister at the Desert Hills Church of Christ.
